BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech softball team will head to the Tar Heel State on Tuesday for a pair of games against UNC Greensboro. The date was originally a single game, but because of both teams losing games to weather, the two squads will now play a doubleheader starting at 2:30 p.m. at the UNCG Softball Stadium.
The games will be streamed live on UNCG’s website.
UNCG is 2-3 on the season with wins over Presbyterian and Norfolk State. The Spartans dropped games to Iowa, South Carolina and Ohio. Katelyn Bedwell, who had a big junior year with a .366 average, 11 home runs and 52 RBIs, leads the team at the plate with a .467 average and a home run. Allison Geiner is batting .438 and the Spartan offense as a whole is hitting .315.
Raeanne Hanks is leading the way in the circle with a 3.78 ERA and a 2-1 record. She has thrown 16.2 innings and has 19 strikeouts. Nicole Thomas has started one game and is 0-1 with a 10.61 ERA and two strikeouts in 9.1 innings.
Tech is 3-2 on the season with wins over Tennessee State, Miami and Ball State. Amanda Ake is leading the team at the plate with a .412 average and two home runs and seven RBIs. Freshman Vanessa Gonzalez is hitting .385 while Kylie McGoldrick is hitting .333. Kelly Heinz (2-2) has a 1.47 ERA with 18 strikeouts in 19.0 innings while Maggie Tyler (1-0) has a 2.50 ERA and 13 strikeouts in 14.0 innings.
Tech is 21-4 all-time against the Spartans, winning the last 10 games in the series. The two teams played a doubleheader in Blacksburg last season with the Hokies winning 8-1 in the first game before rallying to win 10-9 in the second contest thanks to a walk-off, two-RBI single from Kat Banks.
