SPARTANBURG, S.C. - The Virginia Tech softball team wrapped up play Sunday at the Buffalo Wild Wings Spartan Invitational with an 8-1 loss to the host USC Upstate Spartans at Cyrill Stadium.
After a heart-pounding win in their first game of the day that ended with a walk-off home run from Katey Smith, Tech couldn’t capitalize on that momentum in falling to the undefeated Spartans (6-0).
Kylie McGoldrick got the Hokies off to a hot start in the first inning with a two-out home run to center field to give the Hokies a quick 1-0 lead. It marked the fourth time in five games that the Hokies had scored in the first inning this season. But that would be the lone highlight of the game for the Hokies as Meredith Barnes wasted little time in tying it back up as she hit a solo home run of her own in the bottom of the first inning.
The Spartans used a pair of singles and a bases-clearing triple from Erin Schattle in the second inning to take a 3-1 lead. Upstate tacked on two unearned runs in the fourth inning and then scored three more runs in the fifth inning to put the game away.
Kelly Heinz (L, 2-2) went four innings, allowing five runs (three earned) on seven hits with five strikeouts. Maggie Tyler pitched the final two innings, allowing three runs on four hits with a walk and a strikeout.
Tech had just three hits in the game, one apiece from McGoldrick, Vanessa Gonzalez and Michelle Prong. Virginia Tech committed three errors in the game, two coming from the outfield.
The Hokies (3-2) will be back in action on Tuesday, traveling to North Carolina for a single game at 4 p.m. against UNC Greensboro.
