NASHVILLE – Lipscomb’s Kristen Sturdivant hit a walk-off solo home run to lead off the bottom of the seventh inning as the Lady Bisons defeated the Virginia Tech softball team 2-1 Sunday at the Music City Classic at Draper Diamond.
The Hokies got on the board in the second inning when Tech freshman Vanessa Gonzalez connected on a towering home run to left field to make it 1-0. The Lady Bisons got a leadoff double in the third inning from Brianne Welch and moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt and then scored on a passed ball. Tech had a chance in the fifth inning when it loaded the bases with two outs, but Kylie McGoldrick ripped a line drive right to the third baseman as Lipscomb escaped the jam.
After Lipscomb pitcher Tanner Sanders retired six of the next seven batters in the last two innings, Sturdivant stepped up and lifted a ball to left field, easily clearing the fence for the walk-off win.
Tech had just two hits in the game, both coming from Gonzalez.
Kelly Heinz (L, 1-1) was the tough-luck loser. She allowed just two hits, but both of them scored. She allowed two runs (one earned) with two walks and seven strikeouts. Sanders had a big day in the circle for the Lady Bisons. She went the distance, allowing one run on just two hits with four walks and four strikeouts.
The Hokies (2-1) are scheduled to be back in action next weekend at the Buffalo Wild Wings Spartan Invitational hosted by USC Upstate in Spartanburg, S.C. Tech will play two games on Saturday and two on Sunday.
