LOUISVILLE, Ky. (nfca.org) - The National Fastpitch Coaches Association named the Virginia Tech softball coaching staff as the Mid-Atlantic Region coaching staff of the year in a release by the organization on Wednesday.
The award marks the fourth regional honor for the coaching staff. Guided by head coach Scot Thomas, associate head coach Al Brauns, assistant coach Barb Sherwood and volunteer assistant Misty Hall, the Hokies posted several wins over nationally ranked squads during the year, made the NCAA Tournament for the sixth time in program history and posted 38 wins on the season.
Despite being the third seed at the Lexington Regional, the Hokies made it all the way to the regional title game, beating Notre Dame, Marshall and No. 17 Kentucky before falling to the 12th-seeded Wildcats in the if necessary game.
Thomas and his staff were named the Northeast Region Coaching Staff of the Year by the NFCA in 2007 and 2008 and the Mid-Atlantic Region Coaching Staff of the Year in 2012 and 2013.
Oklahoma’s coaching staff was named the overall national coaching staff of the year. The Sooners won the national championship and finished with a 57-4 record.
