GREENSBORO, N.C. (theacc.com) – A league-high six Virginia Tech softball player were named to the 2013 All-ACC Academic Softball Team, as announced Monday by Commissioner John D. Swofford. Seniors Courtney Liddle (graduated; communication), Betty Rose (graduated; management) and Bkaye Smith (biology), along with junior Dani Anderson (human nutrition, foods and exercise) and sophomores Kelsey Mericka (industrial and systems engineering) and Kylie McGoldrick (marketing) were named to the squad for the Hokies.

Florida State junior Kelly Hensley was named the 2013 Softball Scholar-Athlete of the Year. An exercise science major, Hensley was named to the Capital One Academic All-America Third Team and to the Capital One Academic All-District IV First Team. The infielder earned a spot on the Dean’s List for both the fall and spring semesters and is an ACC Top Six for Service Award winner.

All eight of the league’s softball programs are represented on the All-ACC Academic Team, led by Virginia Tech with six student-athletes. Georgia Tech and Virginia placed five on the squad, followed by Boston College and Florida State with four, Maryland and North Carolina with three, and NC State with two players recognized.

Liddle and Virginia’s Taylor Williams were selected for the All-ACC Academic Team for the fourth time. Smith, Anderson and Rose, along with Boston College’s Tory Speer, Florida State’s Jessica Nori, Georgia Tech’s Alysha Rudnik and Virginia’s Alexandra Skinkis earned their third honor. A total of 20 student-athletes on the 2013 academic team have garnered multiple career accolades. For both Mericka and McGoldrick, it was their second time on the team.

The ACC Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards were established in September 2007 to be awarded annually to the top junior or senior student-athlete in their respective sports.

To be eligible for consideration for the All-ACC Academic Team, a student-athlete must have earned a 3.00 grade point average for the previous semester and maintained a 3.00 cumulative average during her academic career.
