LEXINGTON, Ky. (hokiesports.com) - Behind a one-hitter from freshman Kelsey Nunley, the 17th-ranked and 12th-seeded Kentucky softball team downed Virginia Tech 6-2 in a winner’s bracket game Saturday at John Cropp Stadium in the NCAA Softball Championship.
Kentucky struck first with a two-run home run from Lauren Cumbuss in the top of the first inning, but the Hokies rallied in the bottom of the second inning, tying the game on sharp single from Bkaye Smith that took a high hop off shortstop Christian Stokes, allowing two runs to score. That would be Tech’s lone hit of the game.
From there, though, it was all Wildcats as they scored a run in the third inning, one in the fourth and two in the fifth to pull away from the Hokies.
Nunley improved to 26-8 with the one-hitter. She struck out five and walked two. Kelly Heinz (L, 16-8) got the start and went 3.1 innings. She allowed four runs (three earned) on four hits with a walk and four strikeouts. Maggie Tyler allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits with two walks and a strikeout in an inning of work. Senior Jasmin Harrell went the final 2.2 innings, giving up just one hit.
Kentucky (40-18) moved into Sunday’s play and must now be beat twice to be eliminated. Tech (36-20) will play again Saturday night, taking on the winner of Notre Dame/Marshall in an elimination game.
