TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (hokiesports.com) - Six Hokies drove in runs and Maggie Tyler shut the door in relief to power sixth-seeded Virginia Tech to an 8-5 upset win over third-seeded Maryland Thursday in the quarterfinals of the 2013 ACC Softball Championship at JoAnne Graf Field on the campus of Florida State.
With the win, Tech (35-18, 9-11) advances to Friday’s semifinals where it will face the winner of NC State/Virginia at 1 p.m. The Hokies have eliminated Maryland in the first round of the ACC Tournament in consecutive years and is now 6-0 all-time against the Terrapins in tournament play.
Courtney Liddle tied a tournament single-game record with three walks and scored twice while Kylie McGoldrick drove in three on two hits to lead the Hokies. Maryland (31-26, 13-8) was led at the plate by Lindsey Schmeiser, who knocked in four runs, and Nikki Maier, who went 2-for-3.
The Hokies jumped out to an early lead in the first inning. Kylie McGoldrick drove in Lauren Gaskill, who led off the game with a single up the middle, for the game’s first run.
Virginia Tech plated three more runs in the third inning, with the damage coming on a two-run home run from McGoldrick. After Gaskill set the table with another hit to lead off, Courtney Liddle connected on her second career triple before McGoldrick drove one of the scoreboard for a 4-0 Virginia Tech lead.
Schmeiser tied the game with one swing of the bat in the bottom of the third. With the bases loaded and no outs, the ACC Freshman of the Year cleared the left field wall for her first career grand slam. With the four RBIs, she broke the single-season Maryland record for RBIs with 59, breaking the old record set by current assistant Amber Jackson who knocked in 56 in 2007.
Virginia Tech utilized three hits, three walks, and a hit-by-pitch in the top of the fourth inning to grab the lead back and jump out 8-4.
Maryland inched closer in the bottom of the sixth. Terrapin left fielder Nikki Maier drove in Shannon Bustillos to bring the score to 8-5. After Maryland loaded the bases with no outs, Virginia Tech pitcher Maggie Tyler entered in relief and induced three straight outs to end the last Terrapin threat.
Jasmin Harrell (17-8) got the win for the Hokies, throwing three innings while allowing three earned runs. Maggie Tyler threw two hitless innings with two strikeouts for the save. Kelly Heinz got the start and lasted two innings. She gave up two runs on two hits with a walk and three strikeouts.
At the plate, McGoldrick and Gaskill led the way with two hits apiece. Anderson, Courtney Liddle, Bailey Liddle, Kat Banks, Logan Spaw and Bkaye Smith each had one hit.
Kaitlyn Schmeiser (15-13) went 3.0 innings with eight hits and six runs allowed and was credited with the loss for the Terrapins.
Virginia Tech has now advanced to at least the semifinals in seven of the nine ACC Tournaments it has appeared in.
