BLACKSBURG (hokiesports.com) - The Maryland softball team came into Blacksburg Saturday and walked away with a pair of wins over the Hokies at Tech Softball Park. The Terrapins took the first game 3-1 before capitalizing on sloppy Tech defense in the second game to hold on for the 9-7 win.

In the opener, Maryland struck first with two runs in the third inning, using a double steal to plate the first run. After loading the bases, Candice Beards singled in the second run. In the fifth inning, Amanda Ake led off with a solo shot to cut the lead to 2-1, but it wasn’t enough as Maryland pitcher Kaitlyn Schmeiser shut down the Tech offense, limiting the Hokies to just one run on five hits. She also had eight strikeouts with one walk.

Tech was led at the plate by Courtney Liddle, who had two hits. Ake, Dani Anderson and Lauren Gaskill had Tech’s other hits.

Jasmin Harrell (L, 14-8) lasted just two-plus innings, allowing two runs on four hits with two walks, three hit batters and three strikeouts. Maggie Tyler pitched well in relief, tossing five innings of two-hit ball. She allowed a run with three strikeouts and two walks.

In the first inning of the second game, Maryland struck for two runs on a home run from Shannon Bustillos, but in the bottom of the first inning, Liddle eviscerated a pitch from Madison Martin for a three-run home run to give Tech its first lead of the day.

In the third inning, Maryland erupted for seven runs on four Hokie errors to take lead back. Tech scored a pair of runs in the sixth inning on an RBI double from Anderson and an RBI single from Liddle. In the seventh inning, Bkaye laced a one-out triple to plate two runs to make it a two-run game, but the Hokies couldn’t get any closer as Gaskill struck out and then Liddle fouled out with the tying run on first to end the game.

Kelly Heinz (L, 15-7) was roughed up in the this one, lasting just 2.1 innings. She allowed all nine runs (five earned) on four hits with five walks and four strikeouts. Tyler pitched well again, going the final 4.2 innings in the no decision. She allowed no runs on three hits with no walks and seven strikeouts.

The Hokies were led at the plate by Kylie McGoldrick, Kiara Ota, Anderson and Liddle, who all had two hits. For Ota, it was a career-high two hits, coming in her first career start. Smith, Gaskill and Ake each had one. Gaskill also drew three walks.

With the sweep, Maryland moved to 32-24, 13-7 in the ACC while Tech dropped to 33-18, 8-11 in the ACC. Georgia Tech took a pair of games at Boston College on Saturday to move to 9-10 in the ACC and temporarily moved past Virginia Tech into fifth place in the ACC standings.

Tech and Maryland will wrap up the series on Sunday with a single game starting at 1 p.m. Tech’s four seniors will be honored on the field immediately following the game.

Here are the unofficial remaining scenarios for the ACC Tournament. Florida State is locked in as the No. 1 seed, Virginia as the No. 7 seed and Boston College as the No. 8 seed. Virginia Tech holds the tiebreaker over Georgia Tech based on the series (2-1) and Maryland holds the tiebreaker over North Carolina based on the series (2-1).
