CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - In her final home game, Virginia senior pitcher Melanie Mitchell struck out 11 and limited the Virginia Tech offense to three runs in helping the Cavaliers down the Hokies 7-3 Monday night at The Park. Despite the loss, the Hokies still won the series after sweeping Virginia Sunday afternoon.

UVa took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on four hits, but Tech clawed its way back in. Kylie McGoldrick hit a solo home run in the second inning, her ninth of the season, and then sophomore Bailey Liddle blasted her first collegiate home run, a two-run shot in the fourth inning to give Tech the lead.

Leading 3-2 in the fifth inning, the Hokies ran into trouble as they gave up three runs on three hits in the fifth inning and two more in the sixth inning on three more hits to surrender the lead.

Tech had six hits in the game, led by two from McGoldrick. Liddle, Dani Anderson, Bkaye Smith and Lauren Gaskill each had one hit.

Virginia hammered out 12 hits against the Hokies’ pitchers to tally its highest run total in ACC play this year (21 games). Kelly Heinz (L, 14-6) made two appearances, totalling 5.0 innings. She allowed five runs on eight hits with a walk and nine strikeouts. Jasmin Harrell was brought in to try and stop the rallying, but gave up several hits in relief. She lasted just an inning, giving up two runs (one earned) on four hits with a walk and two strikeouts.

The win wrapped up Virginia’s regular season at 21-27, 4-17 in the ACC. Tech is now 31-16, 8-9 in the conference and sitting in fifth place with one conference series left - at home against Maryland next weekend.

The Hokies will head down Route 29 to Lynchburg on Tuesday for a doubleheader against Liberty starting at 2 p.m.
