CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Two all-around team performances helped lift the Virginia Tech softball team to a pair of wins over the University of Virginia Sunday afternoon at The Park as the Hokies won 6-0 and 5-1. With the wins, the Hokies improved to 31-15 overall, 8-8 in the ACC while the Cavaliers fell to 20-27, 3-17 in the league.
In the opener, Lauren Gaskill blasted a two-run home run in the second inning to get Tech on the board, but Bkaye Smith’s single up the middle to plate Dani Anderson in the fifth inning gave Tech a little breathing room. In the sixth inning, Courtney Liddle put down a suicide squeeze bunt to drive in Gaskill and then Bailey Liddle drove in her big sister with a double. The final run scored when Anderson singled to allow the younger Liddle to score.
Freshman Kelly Heinz (W, 14-5) and freshman Maggie Tyler combined to toss the shut out. Heinz went six innings, allowing just five hits and two walks with four strikeouts. Tyler tossed the seventh inning, giving up a hit and a walk while striking out two.
Tech battered UVa starter Melanie Mitchell, scoring six runs on eight hits. Gaskill, Anderson and Smith each had two hits while the Liddle sisters each had a hit.
In the second game, Smith got the Hokies on the board in the second inning with a two-RBI single up the middle. UVa got on the board to cut the lead in half in the fourth inning, but Kat Banks led off the top of the fifth inning with a home run down the line. Later in the inning, Bailey Liddle’s double plated Courtney Liddle and then Gaskill hit her second home run of the day with a solo shot in the sixth inning.
Jasmin Harrell (W, 14-7) went the distance, allowing one run on four hits just one walk and seven strikeouts.
Bailey Liddle led the way with three hits while Gaskill and Smith each had two. Banks and Courtney Liddle each had one hit in the win.
For the day, the Tech pitchers combined to allow just one run on 10 hits with 13 strikeouts and just four walks. At the plate, Gaskill went 4 for 7 with two home runs, a double and 3 RBIs while Smith went 4 for 6 with a double and 3 RBIs. Bailey Liddle went 4 for 7 with a double and a pair of RBIs.
The two teams will wrap up the series on Monday night with a single game starting at 7 p.m. The game will be televised nationally by ESPNU with Adam Amin and Jennie Finch on the call.
