BLACKSBURG (hokiesports.com) - The Virginia Tech softball team will hit the road for a big three-game series at in-state rival Virginia starting Sunday at The Park in Charlottesville. The two teams are scheduled to play the doubleheader on Sunday starting at noon, while Monday’s single game is slated for 7 p.m. and will be broadcast live on ESPNU. Adam Amin and Jennie Finch will have the call for the network.
The Cavaliers will close out the regular season this weekend as they enter with a record of 20-25, 3-15 in the ACC. Virginia has taken conference games from Georgia Tech and Boston College, but is on a six-game losing streak in the conference.
Both teams are coming off a Big South sweep Wednesday. The Hokies recently took two games from the Radford Highlanders at both sites, while the Cavaliers downed the Liberty Flames in a doubleheader in Lynchburg.
Virginia hits .235 as a team with 22 home runs. Marcy Bowdren leads the offensive attack with a .312 average and 22 RBIs. Karli Johnson follows Bowdren with a .277 average and a team-best five home runs, while Kristen Hawkins is hitting .270 with nine doubles. No other regular starter hits over .260.
In the circle, the Cavaliers sport a staff ERA of 3.41 and have given up 46 runs in the last eight games. Melanie Mitchell, who is 15-15 with a 2.45 ERA and 249 strikeouts in 197.0 innings, leads Virginia. Aimee Chapdelaine has seen some action as she is 5-9 with a 4.84 ERA and 32 strikeouts in 85.1 innings and Emma Mitchell has pitched 11 innings with a 0-1 record, a 9.55 ERA and eight strikeouts.
Tech has an NCAA RPI of 32nd while Virginia’s RPI is 109th.

Following the three-game series, the Hokies will head south on Tuesday for a doubleheader at Liberty in Lynchburg.
