BLACKSBURG (hokiesports.com) - The Virginia Tech softball team dropped a pair of games to Longwood Wednesday night at Tech Softball Park, falling 6-5 in eight innings and 5-4.
In the first game, Longwood’s Megan Baltzell hit two home runs and Brooke Short had four hits to pace the Lancers’ offense, which pounded out 12 hits. Tech tied it up in the seventh inning to force extra innings, but Longwood got the bunt down and scored its runner on a single while Tech popped up its bunt and never moved the runner past second base.
Kat Banks, Amanda Ake and Bkaye Smith each had two hits. Jasmin Harrell gave up four runs on seven hits in just 2.1 innings. Maggie Tyler (L, 2-1) pitched the final 5.1 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on five hits.
In the second game, Baltzell hit her nation-leading 22nd home run - a two-run shot - in the first inning and Longwood (33-11) never looked back. Tech threatened several times to take the lead, but couldn’t ever get the big hit.
Banks had two hits to lead the way. Bailey Liddle (L, 0-2) went 4.2 innings, allowing five runs on seven hits while Tyler went 2.1 innings, giving up two hits.
Tech’s pitching staff gave up 21 hits in the doubleheader, including four home runs. The offense didn’t help the pitchers much, leaving 21 runners on base in the doubleheader.
The losses mark the first non-conference sweep at Tech Softball Park for the Hokies since Liberty did it in 2006, an impressive seven years ago.
The Hokies (27-12) will have it no easier this weekend, hosting No. 23 Florida State at home. The two will play a doubleheader on Saturday at noon with the first game being televises nationally by ESPNU. Sunday’s single game starts at 1 p.m.
