CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. (hokiesports.com) - Behind four home runs and some clutch pitching in key situations, the Virginia Tech softball team took a pair of games from Boston College Saturday afternoon at Shea Field. The Hokies won the opener 4-1 before holding on for a 5-4 win in the second game.
In the opener, Courtney Liddle crushed a three-run home run in the first inning and Dani Anderson followed suit later in the inning. That would be all the runs Tech would score, but it would be more than enough for Kelly Heinz. The freshman allowed just one run on three hits with four walks and 10 strikeouts in shutting down the Eagles and improving to 13-3 on the year.
Tech had eight hits in the game, led by two from Kylie McGoldrick and one apiece from Lauren Gaskill, Logan Spaw, Anderson, Liddle, Bkaye Smith and Amanda Ake.
In the second game, Tech struck first with a pair of runs in the third inning, one on a double from McGoldrick and one on a sac fly from Liddle. BC tied it up with two runs in the bottom of the third before Tech took the lead back in the fourth inning on a two-run home run from Ake. The Eagles countered with a solo home run in the fourth, but McGoldrick’s leadoff home run in the fifth proved to be the difference after BC got a solo home run in the sixth inning.
Jasmin Harrell (W, 11-6) gave up four runs on seven hits, but got a big effort in the seventh inning through the heart of the BC order to pick up the win. She walked five and struck out two.
McGoldrick picked up three more hits to give her five for the day. Courtney Liddle, Bailey Liddle, Kat Banks and Ake accounted for Tech’s seven hits.
Tech improves to 26-10, 5-5 in the ACC while BC falls to 10-25, 1-10 in the league.
The two teams will wrap up the three-game series on Sunday with a single game starting at noon.
