BLACKSBURG (hokiesports.com) - The Virginia Tech softball team dropped a 10-4 decision to Georgia Tech Sunday afternoon at Tech Softball Park to wrap up the three-game set. Despite the loss, the Hokies still took the series 2-1 after sweeping the Yellow Jackets on Saturday.
Georgia Tech plated the first run of the game in the top of the second inning, scoring on a Hokie error. Pitcher Hope Rush helped her own cause in the third inning with a two-run home run to left field to give the Yellow Jackets a 3-0 lead. Rush blasted a solo home run in her next at bat, her 14th of the season, to make it 4-0. Courtney Ziese hit a solo shot two batters to make it 5-0 and force a pitching change.
The Hokies got on the board in the fifth inning when Lauren Gaskill drove in Dani Anderson with a single to the gap. Tech threatened to get more, but a great play by Chelsie Thomas at second base to snare a line drive by Kylie McGoldrick and double off Gaskill ended the inning. Georgia Tech got that run back and one more in the sixth inning before getting three more in the seventh on the fourth home run of the game given up by Tech’s pitchers.
In the seventh inning, Gaskill drove in a run with an infield single and then McGoldrick launched a two-run home run to left-center, but it wasn’t enough as the Yellow Jackets held on for the win.
Jasmin Harrell (L, 10-5) took the loss, going 4.2 innings. The senior allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits with a walk and four strikeouts. Kelly Heinz tossed 1.1 innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits with a walk and two strikeouts. Maggie Tyler got the last three outs for the Hokies, giving up three runs on three hits with a pair of strikeouts.
The Hokies had eight hits at the plate, led by two apiece from Gaskill and McGoldrick. Logan Spaw, Bailey Liddle, Courtney Liddle and Anderson each had one.
With the loss, the Hokies fell to 23-9, 3-5 in the ACC while Georgia Tech improved to 18-21, 5-3 in the conference.
Tech will be back in action on Wednesday, taking on in-state rival James Madison University (27-9, 9-0 CAA) in a road doubleheader beginning at 5 p.m.
