BLACKSBURG (hokiesports.com) - The Virginia Tech softball team came out swinging and racked up 17 runs in a pair of victories over Georgia Tech Saturday afternoon in front of 946 fans at Tech Softball Park. The Hokies won the first game 7-2 before picking up a 10-2, run-rule win in the second game. Virginia Tech improved to 23-8 overall, 3-4 in the ACC while Georgia Tech fell to 17-21, 4-4 in the conference.
In the opener, the Hokies got on the board in the second inning when Dani Anderson drove in Amanda Ake with a sacrifice fly. The Yellow Jackets tied it up in the third with an RBI single but Tech responded in the bottom half of the frame when Kylie McGoldrick singled up the middle to plate Lauren Gaskill.
In the bottom of the fourth inning, Gaskill launched a three-run home run over the scoreboard to give the Hokies a 5-1 lead. Tech plated two more runs in the sixth inning, one on a bases-loaded walk from Courtney Liddle and one on an RBI ground out from Logan Spaw.
Both Techs had seven hits at the plate, but the Yellow Jackets committed three errors in the field. McGoldrick led the way with two hits while Gaskill, Liddle, Spaw, Ake and Anderson each had one.
Jasmin Harrell (W, 10-4) went the distance, allowing two runs on seven hits with three walks and eight strikeouts. Hope Rush (L, 9-11) was saddled with the loss. She went five innings, giving up seven runs (three earned) on seven hits with no strikeouts. Kylie Kleinschmidt pitched the sixth inning, giving up a walk.
In the second game, Tech raced out to a big lead in the first inning when Ake launched a grand slam to left field, her third home run of the season. In the third inning, Liddle lifted a sac fly to center, which plated McGoldrick, who reached on a double. Bkaye Smith smacked a two-RBI single up the middle in the fifth inning to give Tech a 7-0 lead. McGoldrick lifted a fly ball to left field to drive in Nina Compton and then Liddle doubled in Smith to make it 9-0. Spaw singled to center field to plate Liddle to give Tech a 10-run lead.
Georgia Tech cut into the lead with a solo home run and an RBI single in the fifth inning, but it wouldn’t be enough as the Hokies picked up the run-rule victory.
At the plate, McGoldrick and Ake each had a pair of hits to lead the way while Liddle and Smith each had one.
Kelly Heinz (W, 11-3) went all five innings, allowing two runs on six hits with three strikeouts.
It marks the first time Virginia Tech has won the season series against Georgia Tech since 2008.
The two teams will wrap up the series Sunday with a single game at 1 p.m., that will be televised live and for free on the ACC Digital Network on YouTube.
