BLACKSBURG (hokiesports.com) - The Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech softball teams will take to the diamond this weekend for an important ACC series at Tech Softball Park. The two are tentatively scheduled to play a Saturday doubleheader at 4 p.m. and the single game on Sunday at 1 p.m., but the scheduled could change baed on field conditions after Thursday’s snowstorm.

Blacksburg received around five inches of snow Thursday, and while it’s rapidly melting, the ground is saturated and the outfield is a soggy mess. The grounds crew hopes to have it playable by Saturday evening, but stay tuned to hokiesports.com and @VT_Softball on Twitter for updates.

Saturday is Military Appreciation Day as the Hokies will be wearing special camo jerseys to pay tribute. Each member of the team was allowed to pick a branch of the military they wanted on the back of their jersey and many picked ones that had special meaning to them and their families. Free “United We Stand” T-shirts will be handed out to the first 350 fans in attendance. Additionally, all military, fire, police and EMT personnel will be entered to win Virginia Tech apparel by showing a valid I.D. at the marketing gazebo.

Sunday’s series finale is slated for 1 p.m. and will broadcast live on the ACC Digital Network on YouTube. It is free to watch and will feature Mike Hogewood and Barbara Jordan on the call. Sunday is also Hokie Kids’ Club Day. All members are invited to Tech Softball Park to watch the game and then and meet the players for a post-game autograph session.

Georgia Tech, the defending ACC champion, is 17-19, 4-2 ACC and has won both of their ACC series so far this season, taking two games from both Virginia and NC State. Georgia Tech currently sits in third place in the league with a 4-2 conference record.

On the season, Georgia Tech is batting .290, led by two players batting over .400 in Ashley Thomas (.424) and Alysha Rudnik (.411). In the circle, Hope Rush owns a team-best 3.69 ERA with a record of 9-10. Rush also has 12 home runs and 41 RBIs.

In ACC games, Georgia Tech has the second-best batting average at .321 and the second-lowest ERA in ACC play at 2.90. Rudnik is batting .650 in conference games, followed by Ashley Thomas’ .632 batting average.

Georgia Tech leads the all-time series, 20-13 after beating the Hokies in the championship game of last year’s ACC Tournament in Chapel Hill. Virginia Tech is 5-6 against Georgia Tech at Tech Softball Park in Blacksburg and the Yellow Jackets have won the last four conference series.
