Tech returns home to face UNCG

BLACKSBURG (hokiesports.com) - The Virginia Tech softball team will play at home for just the second time this season when it hosts UNCG Tuesday in a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m. The game is a make-up date from earlier this season when the original game was postponed because of weather.

Tech is 19-8 overall, but has lost five of its last six after starting the season 18-3. The Spartans are 25-8 overall after taking two of three from Southern Conference foe Elon this past weekend.

UNCG is led offensively by Allison Greiner, who is hitting .396. Freshman catcher Lindsay Thomas has started all 33 games and is hitting .384 with 13 home runs and 28 RBIs. Five other Spartans are hitting .333 or higher for an offense that averages .294. UNCG has 22 home runs, 149 RBIs and 34 stolen bases.

In the circle, Raeanne Hanks has seen the most action, throwing 111.1 of 220.1 innings thus far. She is 14-3 with a 1.63 ERA and 110 strikeouts and three saves. Freshman Nicole Thomas is 4-0 with a 2.92 ERA in 36.0 innings, Kelly Lupton is 3-1 with a 3.82 ERA in 33.0 innings and Erica Navarette is 4-4 with a 4.20 ERA in 40.0 innings.

Admission to Tech Softball Park is free and the marketing department will hand out free pom-poms for all Hokie fans in attendance.

Of Note:
Tech is 19-4 all-time against UNCG, 8-1 at Tech Softball Park … Tech went 4-0 last season against the Spartans, beating them twice at a tournament in Jacksonville and then sweeping them on the road later in the season … Virginia Tech is on a seven-game winning streak against UNCG and has won 19 of the last 20 after UNCG won the first three games in the series … The series began in 1996, Tech’s first season as a varsity program … Virginia Tech’s Kiara Ota and UNCG’s Lindsay and Nicole Thomas both attended Northwood High in Irvine, Calif., and all graduated together last year … Tech’s Laura Wolff and UNCG’s Toni McReynolds both graduated from James Madison High in Vienna … UNCG is 25-8 on the season surpassing its win total from a season ago under first-year head coach Janelle Breneman.
