BLACKSBURG, Va. – The No. 19 Virginia Tech softball team dropped a pair of games to the NC State Wolfpack Saturday afternoon at Tech Softball Park, falling 10-2 and 9-2 in its ACC and home openers. The Hokies fell to 18-6 overall and 0-2 in the ACC, while NC State improved to 13-13-1 and 2-3 in the conference.
In the first game, NC State got on the board early with a solo home run over the center field fence to grab the momentum in the first at bat. The Wolfpack scored six more in the third, before Tech notched its first hit of the game. The Hokies tried to find a rhythm but Tech's two runs off of three hits in the third were not enough as the game ended after five innings.
Tech’s three hits came from three different Hokies - Courtney Liddle, Kat Banks and Dani Anderson. The Wolfpack came out swinging as they notched 14 hits and were led by Scout Albertson and Bethany Wells, who recorded three apiece.
Jasmin Harrell (7-4) started in the circle for Tech and took the loss. She allowed six runs off of seven hits with two walks in 2.1 innings. Maggie Tyler entered in relief, but allowed the four final runs off of seven hits with two strikeouts.
NC State continued with the momentum in the second game as it came out hot in the first and grabbed a 4-0 lead and never looked back. The Hokies scored two runs in the bottom of the seventh but it was too little, too late.
Tech used three pitchers in the circle and Kelly Heinz (9-1) was saddled with her first loss of the season. Bailey Liddle and Harrell also saw action. The trio allowed nine runs off of 11 hits with three strikeouts and seven walks.
The Wolfpack had four players with multiple hits, and Kirsty Grant led NC State with two hits and two runs in three at bats. Bkaye Smith recorded two of the Hokies’ three hits to lead Tech.
Emily Weiman pitched all 12 innings of the doubleheader for NC State and improved to 12-12 on the season. She finished the day allowing four runs off of six hits with three walks and four strikeouts.
The two teams will return to Tech Softball Park tomorrow at 1 p.m., to wrap up the three-game series.
