FULLERTON, Calif. (hokiesports.com) - A five-run fourth inning proved to be all the second-ranked Arizona State softball team would need in downing No. 21 Virginia Tech 11-0 Friday on the second day of the Judi Garman Classic on the campus of Cal State Fullerton.

The two teams were scoreless through three innings, but the high-powered offense of ASU got rolling in the fourth inning, highlighted by a leadoff home run. The Sun Devils tacked on two runs in the fifth and four more in the seventh to pull away from the Hokies.

ASU, which came in hitting .363 as a team, did nothing to hurt its average with 16 hits off the Tech pitching. Logan Spaw had both hits for the Hokies off Mackenzie Popescue while Lauren Gaskill, Courtney Liddle and Spaw each drew a walk.

In the circle, Tech had to use three pitchers to try and stop the potent Sun Devil attack. Jasmin Harrell (L, 7-2) went 3.1 innings, allowing three runs on five hits with a walk. Kelly Heinz didn’t get an out, giving up two runs (one earned) on two hits while Maggie Tyler pitched the final 3.2 innings, giving up six runs (five earned) on nine hits with four walks and a strikeout.

Betty Rose threw out ASU’s Cheyenne Coyle, marking the first time this year a Sun Devil runner has been thrown out attempting to steal.

Tech (17-3) will wrap up its Spring Break trip on Saturday with games against Pacific at 12:30 p.m. local time (3:30 Eastern) and Cal State Fullerton at 5:30 p.m. local time (8:30 p.m. Eastern). The Hokies move to the main field at the Anderson Family Field complex for their last two games.
