LONG BEACH, Calif. (hokiesports.com) - The 23rd-ranked Virginia Tech softball team saw its 12-game winning streak come to an end Saturday with a 3-1 loss to UNLV at the 49er Softball Complex on the campus of Long Beach State as part of the LBSU Invitational.
UNLV used a pair of solo home runs off Tech starter Jasmin Harrell (L, 6-1) and tacked on a run in the seventh off Kelly Heinz to account for its scoring.
Trailing 1-0 in the fourth, the Hokies tied it up when Bkaye Smith singled through the left side, but Lauren Gaskill struck out with the bases loaded to end the threat and UNLV scored runs in the sixth and seventh innings to win it.
Tech had just five hits, led by two from Smith. Courtney Liddle, Kelsey Mericka and Kat Banks also had hits for the Hokies. Tech had 15 ground outs in the loss against UNLV’s Amanda Oliveto.
Harrell gave up two runs on five hits with a walk and two strikeouts in six innings. Heinz gave up a run on two hits with a walk and a strikeout in her inning of work.
Tech (15-2) is scheduled to be back in action Thursday on the first day of the Judi Garmin Invitational on the campus of Cal State Fullerton. Tech will open with nationally ranked Arizona and Michigan on the first day.
