LAKEWOOD, Calif. (hokiesports.com) - The 23rd-ranked Virginia Tech softball team picked up a dramatic 2-1 win over No. 9 UCLA Friday evening at the Long Beach State Invitational at Mayfair Park to run its winning streak to 12 games.
Tech came out swinging, hitting the UCLA duo of Jessica Hall and Ally Carda hard, but through four innings, no one had scored. In the fifth inning, with two outs, senior Bkaye Smith tripled down the left field to bring up the hot-hitting Lauren Gaskill. On a 3-2 pitch, the sophomore blasted a two-run home run to deep center field to give Tech the 2-0 lead.
That’s the way it stood until the seventh inning, when the Bruins (18-4) made it interesting. Carda led off the seventh with a home run to left-center field and then with one out, Alyssa Tiumalu tripled to right field to put the tying run 60 feet away. Sam Duran bunted, but the runner held, for the second out. With the game on the line, Alexis Bennett laced a line drive to shortstop, but Smith laid out to her right to snag the ball for the Web Gem and the game saver as the Hokies held on for the dramatic win.
Heinz (W, 7-0) was masterful against one of the top offenses in the country, taking a no hitter into the sixth inning before giving up a leadoff double. The freshman ended up giving up a run on three hits with three walks and six strikeouts.
Tech had nine hits in the game, led by two apiece from Gaskill, Kylie McGoldrick, Kelsey Mericka and Smith. Courtney Liddle also had one hit.
Virginia Tech’s last win over a top-10 team came in 2008 when the Hokies beat No. 6 Michigan twice on the same day in 2008 to advance to the WCWS. It marks just the six win over a top-10 program in program history.
Tech (15-1) will be back in action on Saturday, taking on UNLV at 11:30 a.m. local time (2:30 p.m. Eastern) at Long Beach State’s 49er Softball Complex.
