KENNESAW, Ga. (hokiesports.com) - The Virginia Tech softball team continued its winning ways with a 5-1 victory over Jacksonville State Saturday afternoon at the Phyllis Rafter Memorial. Tech’s second game, scheduled against Campbell, was cancelled after the games fell too far behind schedule.
Jacksonville State (5-7) struck first in the opening inning with an RBI fielder’s choice, but it was all Tech after that. In the bottom of the inning, Dani Anderson drew a bases loaded walk to plate Lauren Gaskill to tie it up.
In the fourth inning, Gaskill came through with a single to right field to drive in Bkaye Smith and in the fifth inning, Amanda Ake singled to drive in Anderson before Gaskill produced an RBI ground out to score Jessica McNamara. In the sixth inning, Kelsey Mericka - playing in her hometown - doubled to left center to drive in Courtney Liddle for the final run.
Tech got a strong pitching performance from a pair of freshmen to lead the way. Maggie Tyler (W, 2-0) went four strong innings, allowing one run on a hit with three walks and four strikeouts. Kelly Heinz got the three inning save, giving up just a hit while striking out four.
Gaskill had a pair of hits and two RBIs while Smith had a pair of doubles and drew a walk. Liddle, Mericka, McNamara and Ake also had a hit apiece. Anderson drew three walks.
The Hokies (10-1) are scheduled to be back in action on Sunday for what is now a doubleheader against a 10-1 Kennesaw State team starting at 2 p.m. at Bailey Park on campus.
