TROY, Ala. (hokiesports.com) – The Virginia Tech softball team closed the Troy Subway Invitational Sunday afternoon with a come-from-behind 5-3 win over the North Florida Ospreys at the Troy Softball Complex to win the four-team tournament in undefeated fashion.

After the Ospreys went up 2-0 with runs in the third and fourth innings, the Hokies responded in the bottom of the fourth with a lead-off single from Lauren Gaskill, the MVP of the tournament, and then Kat Banks reached first on an error from the shortstop. Senior Courtney Liddle, who was placed on the all tournament team, stepped up and recorded the sac fly to score Gaskill to put the Hokies on the board.

Tech tied the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the fifth inning when Kelsey Mericka blasted one to the right field fence, legging it out for a triple. Dani Anderson kept the hitting going with a single to shallow right center field off the first pitch to bring in Mericka.

The Hokies took the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. With the bases loaded and a full count, Dani Anderson got her fourth ball to walk and score Gaskill to make it a 3-2 ball game. Tech continued its momentum with Jessica McNamara shooting a single to shallow left center to give Tech a 5-2 lead.

North Florida tried to tie the score in the seventh inning, but a solo home run to start it off wasn’t enough as the Hokies took the 5-3 victory.

Jasmin Harrell (W, 4-0) got the win in relief of Kelly Heinz. The senior went 3.1 innings, allowing one run off of one hit with one walk and five strikeouts to be placed on the all-tournament team. Heinz went 3.2 innings, allowing two runs on four hits with a walk and three strikeouts.

Gaskill and Mericka each had two hits to lead the way for Tech. Banks, Anderson and McNamara also picked up a hit in the win.

The Hokies (9-1) are scheduled to be back in action on Wednesday, travelling to Radford for a single game at 3 p.m., weather permitting. Tech will play in the Phyllis Rafter Memorial next weekend at the Twin Creeks Complex in Woodstock, Ga.
