CLERMONT, Fla. – The Virginia Tech softball team split a pair of games Saturday at the Dot Richardson Collegiate Softball Invitational, beating Chattanooga 7-5 before falling to Fordham 2-0.

In the opener, Tech got on the board in the first inning when Kylie McGoldrick doubled and scored on two wild pitches. The Hokies got two more runs in the second inning when Kat Banks lifted a two-run home run to left field before Chattanooga scored three runs (one earned) in the second inning to tie it up. A big four-run fourth inning broke it open for the Hokies. Banks scored on McGoldrick’s single and Lauren Gaskill and McGoldrick scored on Courtney Liddle’s home run which came on the 12th pitch of the at bat.

The Lady Mocs cut the lead to 7-5, but freshman Kelly Heinz came in and picked up the save, shutting down a Chattanooga rally. Jasmin Harrell (W, 2-0) went five-plus innings, allowing four runs (one earned) on six hits with a walk and four strikeouts. Maggie Tyler pitched an inning, allowing a run on zero hits with a walk and strikeout. Heinz pitched the seventh inning, allowing two hits, to pick up the save.

At the plate, Tech had 11 hits, led by McGoldrick’s three. Gaskill, Liddle and Banks each had two while Betty Rose and Dani Anderson each had one.

In the nightcap, Tech’s bats went quiet, picking up just three hits as the Hokies suffered their first loss of the season. Fordham scored an unearned run in the first inning and tacked on one in the third inning to account for the scoring.

Bailey Liddle (L, 0-1) went 2.1 before she was lifted for Heinz. Liddle gave up two runs (one earned on three hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Heinz kept the Hokies in it, going 4.2 innings, allowing no runs on zero hits with a walk and seven strikeouts.

Picking up the hits for Tech were Bkaye Smith, McGoldrick and Gaskill.

Tech (3-1) will finish up the tournament Sunday with at game at 11 a.m. against Southern Illinois. The Hokies beat the Salukis 4-2 on Friday night.
