KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Behind 12 hits from the offense and another gem of an outing from pitcher Jasmin Harrell, the Virginia Tech softball team downed Miami (Ohio) 6-0 Saturday in the second round of the NCAA Tournament at Lee Stadium to advance to Sunday’s championship game.
“I just told the girls, that this is easily one of the most complete games we've played in the postseason ever that I can think of," Tech head coach Scot Thomas said. "We did the little things good, we were patient at the plate against a really solid team that was pumped up after a big win last night so hats off to them. I thought that we stayed with it, we got things done late and was able to put them away a little bit, but don't be surprised to see them get a little bit more energy and come back tonight. It was a great game, I'm real proud of our bunch.”
Facing one of the top pitchers in the country in Miami’s Jessica Simpson, the Hokies broke out offensively to run away from the RedHawks. After a scoreless first three innings, the Hokies finally broke through in the fourth inning. Dani Anderson drove in pinch runner Laura Wolff with a single up the middle in the fourth inning to open the scoring. In the fifth inning, Courtney Liddle reached on an infield single to plate Bkaye Smith. In the sixth inning, pinch hitter Katey Smith came up big with an RBI single to plate pinch runner Nina Compton.
Leading 3-0, the Hokies tacked on three more runs in the seventh inning to put it away. Kat Banks singled to drive in Kylie McGoldrick before Anderson singled to drive in Kelsey Mericka. Logan Spaw lifted a sacrifice fly to center to plate Betty Rose and make it 6-0.
Harrell (W, 31-14) tossed another shutout, her 10th of the season. She allowed just three hits and two walks with four strikeouts.
Anderson led the way with four hits and two RBIs while Lauren Gaskill had two hits. McGoldrick, Liddle, Mericka, Banks, Spaw and Katey Smith each had one hit.
With the win, the Hokies are now 42-19 on the season and advance to Sunday’s regional championship. Tech will play Miami or top-seeded Tennessee at 1:30 p.m. and has to be beaten twice.
