BLACKSBURG - Four members of the Virginia Tech softball squad were named to the NFCA's all-region squad, as announced Thursday afternoon by the organization. Freshman outfielder Lauren Gaskill was named to the first team while pitcher Jasmin Harrell, first baseman Courtney Liddle and third baseman Kelsey Mericka were all named to the second team.
Virginia Tech is in the Mid-Atlantic Region and all four are now eligible for All-America honors.
Gaskill is second on the team in batting with a .307 average and has 22 stolen bases on the season along with 14 doubles. The smooth-fielding center fielder has just one error on the season.
For Liddle, it's her second all-region honor as the junior made the first team last year. She leads the team with a .313 average with 45 walks and eight home runs. For Harrell and Mericka, it's their first all-region honors. Harrell is 29-14 on the season while Mericka leads the team in home runs with nine.
Tech (40-19) will begin NCAA Regional play Friday afternoon in Knoxville, Tenn., against third-seeded UAB at 3:30 p.m.
