CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - A seven-run fourth inning keyed third-seeded Georgia Tech's big offensive onslaught en route to knocking off fourth-seeded Virginia Tech 9-1 in five innings in the championship game of the 2012 ACC Championship, played Saturday afternoon at Anderson Stadium.
The Yellow Jackets struck first with a solo home run in the third inning, but the Hokies used doubles from Lauren Gaskill and Courtney Liddle to tie it back up. In the fourth inning, Georgia Tech sent 12 batters to the plate and scored seven runs to break the game open. The Yellow Jackets ended it in the fifth inning with a single to make it 9-1.
The Hokies had just three hits in the game, one apiece from Gaskill, Liddle and Betty Rose. Rose also threw out two would-be base stealers from behind the plate.
After dazzling the first two games of the tournament, Tech starter Jasmin Harrell (L, 29-14) wasn’t as sharp in defeat. She gave up five runs on 10 hits with a walk and a strikeout. Bailey Liddle was brought into the game in the fourth inning, but failed to get any of the three batters she faced out. She gave up three runs on a hit with two walks.
While the end result was a disappointment, the run netted four players All-ACC Tournament honors: Harrell, Gaskill, Kelsey Mericka and Kylie McGoldrick. It was Tech's fourth appearance in the ACC's championship game.
Virginia Tech (40-19) will now have to wait to learn its postseason fate. With an ACC Tournament runner-up finish and an RPI of 31 entering the weekend, the Hokies are in good position to earn their first berth in the NCAA Tournament since 2008. The NCAA will announce its 64-team field Sunday night at 10 p.m. live on ESPNU.
