Harrell, Galindo and Knight Named ACC Softball Players of the Week
Maryland and Virginia Tech split final weekly honors of the year

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Maryland senior left fielder Vangie Galindo has been named the ACC Softball Player of the Week, announced by the conference office on Tuesday. Virginia Tech junior Jasmin Harrell and Maryland senior Kendra Knight have been named the Co-Pitchers of the Week.

Galindo led the Terrapins to two wins over No. 19 Florida State with a .583 average at the plate. She went 4-for-5 Sunday in the series finale with the game-tying double in the bottom of the seventh and a single in the 10th that also made her Maryland’s all-time hits leader with 220 in her career. With two outs in the bottom of the seventh on Sunday, two runners on and the Terps down 3-1, the Fontana, Calif., native doubled to left center to tie the game at three-all and force extra innings. In the bottom of the 10th, Galindo led off with an infield single and advanced to second on a Seminoles error. Sara Acosta brought her in for the game-winning run.

Harrell picked up both wins in the circle in a midweek doubleheader against Liberty, including a five-inning perfect game in the opening game - the sixth perfect game in school history and 30th solo no-hitter - with eight strikeouts. It was her first career no-hitter and perfect game. In the second game, the native of Irvine, Calif., entered in relief and threw another five innings, allowing two hits while striking out six more to move to 27-13 on the season. For the day, she allowed no runs on two hits with 14 strikeouts in 10.0 innings pitched.

Knight had 24.0 innings pitched and complete games in all three games vs. No. 19 Florida State to help the Terrapins take the series from the Seminoles. She allowed just 11 hits, four earned runs and racked up 21 strikeouts. The Seminoles, who averaged .280 at the plate as a team before this weekend, hit just .134 against her and stranded 26 runners on base. The Virginia Beach, Va., native also broke Maryland’s single-season record for strikeouts on Sunday with 292.

The two pitchers will likely face off in the first round of the upcoming ACC Championship, which starts Thursday in Chapel Hill. The fourth-seeded Hokies and fifth-seeded Terps will face off at 7:30 p.m. Thursday night.
