BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech softball team (38-18, 12-8 ACC) has earned the No. 4 seed at the upcoming ACC Championship, as released Sunday by the conference office, and will face fifth-seeded Maryland in the first round. The Championship will be held Thursday-Saturday at UNC’s Anderson Stadium in Chapel Hill.

The Hokies swept Maryland earlier this season in College Park, winning 5-0, 7-5 and 5-1, but this same Maryland team has been red hot down the stretch to finish with a 34-19 record, 10-8 in the ACC. The Terps have won 14 of their last 16, including two wins over No. 19 Florida State this weekend at home.

Tech’s game with Maryland is scheduled to start at 7:30 p.m. Thursday night in the final game of the day and the Hokies will be the home team in the contest. It will be broadcast live on ESPN3, an online-only entity. Check back later this week for the direct link.

By taking two of three from Boston College this weekend, coupled with FSU losing two to Maryland, the host Tar Heels (40-12, 13-4 ACC) won the regular season title and will be the top seed. They will face eighth-seeded Boston College (23-29, 3-18 ACC) in the first round at 5 p.m. Third-seeded Georgia Tech (33-21, 12-8 ACC) and sixth-seeded Virginia (26-24, 8-13 ACC) will kick off the tournament at noon, followed by second-seeded FSU (45-13, 16-5 ACC) and seventh-seeded NC State (23-30, 5-15 ACC) at 2:30 p.m.

Virginia Tech and Georgia Tech both finished at 12-8 in the ACC, but the Yellow Jackets took two of three from the Hokies to earn the tiebreaker. Florida State won 16 games in the league, but played all 21 games while UNC won just 13 games, but had four games rained out, putting the Tar Heels percentage points ahead of the Seminoles, even though FSU beat UNC two of three times this season.

The first two games of the opening round will be broadcast on RSN while the second two will be on ESPN3. Both of Friday’s semifinals will be broadcast live on RSN and then Saturday’s championship game will be shown live on ESPN. The full bracket can be found to the right.
