BLACKSBURG, Va. – Coming off a 2-1 home series against conference rival Virginia this past weekend, the Virginia Tech softball team (34-16) travels across the bridge to take on New River Valley rival Radford University Tuesday at the Dedmon Center Field for a single game starting at 5 p.m. The game was originally scheduled for April 18^th but was postponed due to inclement weather.

This is the 31st overall meeting between the two teams, as the Hokies lead the Highlanders 30-10 in the all-time series. The series dates back to 1996 where Radford captured five straight wins to open the series. Tech’s first win came in 1998, where the Hokies captured a 10-8 win. During a five-year span, the Hokies went on a 15-game winning streak against the Highlanders starting in 1999 and ending in 2004, which includes the largest margin of victory. On March 30, 2002, the Hokies shut out Radford, 15-0, in Blacksburg, which is one of the 10 shutouts for Tech in the series.

Tech and Radford (28-14) last met this season on Feb. 14 early in the 2012 season. The Hokies cruised by the Highlanders, 9-1, in a five innings. Radford made it easy for the Hokies as it committed three errors, hit four batters and walked six to account for 13 free passes of some sort for Tech. The Hokies tallied four hits as Dani Anderson collected two, while Courtney Liddle and Kylie McGoldrick had one apiece. Jasmine Harrell allowed just one run on two hits, with two walks and nine strikeouts.

The Highlanders are coming off a three-game sweep over Big South opponent Winthrop this past weekend. As a team, Radford has a .255 batting average, with 268 hits and 180 runs. Senior Nichole Beall leads the squad with 45 hits and 41 runs, good for a .375 percentage. The shortstop also leads the team in home runs with 11.

Jackie Jenkins will most likely be in the circle for the Highlanders as she holds a 13-6 record this season. The junior has a 2.05 ERA with 28 strikeouts in 119.1 innings, while charting 24 walks, three wild pitches and six hit batters. Behind Jenkins is freshman Micalah Sacre. In 68.2 innings played, Sacre is 7-4 with a 2.65 ERA and 85 strikeouts. She has 39 walks, six wild pitches and six hit batters.

Following Tuesday’s game, the Hokies will jump back into conference play Saturday, when they travel to Atlanta, Ga., for a three-game series against Georgia Tech. The series will begin with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m.
