CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – The Virginia Tech softball downed Boston College 8-5 Sunday afternoon at Shea Field to take the three-game series, 2-1.

Tech struck in the first inning for a run thanks to a bloop single down the line by Kelsey Mericka to score Kylie McGoldrick. In the second inning, Tech scored two unearned runs when the BC left fielder dropped McGoldrick’s fly ball. In the third inning, pinch hitter Logan Spaw came up clutch with an RBI single to the gap to plate pinch runner Nina Compton and then in the fourth inning, Mericka got hit with the bases loaded to drive in Bkaye Smith.

The Eagles got two runs in the fourth inning on a two-run home run and another one on a solo home run in the fifth inning.

With the Hokies hanging on to a two-run lead, Spaw cranked a solo home run to left-center in the seventh inning to make it 6-3 and give the Hokies a little breathing room. But the Hokies weren’t done, scoring two more runs. Kat Banks drew a walk and moved to third on pinch hitter Katey Smith’s single. With Bkaye Smith back in the game for Katey Smith, she took off on the pitch and Lauren Gaskill doubled to the gap on the hit and run to plate both runners to make it 8-3.

Tech had 10 hits in the game, led by two from Spaw, Gaskill and Banks. Mericka, Betty Rose, Katey Smith and Bkaye Smith each had one.

Jasmin Harrell (W, 21-10) went the distance, allowing five runs on seven hits (three home runs) with two walks and six strikeouts.

Tech (32-15, 9-5 ACC) will be back in action on Wednesday for a single game at NRV rival Radford, starting at 7 p.m. It’ll be a big game as both teams are ranked in the top 35 of this week’s NCAA RPI. Tech won the first game against the Highlanders this year, 9-1 at home.
