COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Virginia Tech softball team completed a three-game sweep of the University of Maryland with a 5-1 win Sunday at Robert E. Taylor Stadium to run its winning streak to nine games and improve to 27-12 overall, 6-2 in the ACC.The win was also head coach Scot Thomas' 600th career victory, coming in his 17th season at the helm of the Hokies.
The Hokies jumped on Maryland starter Kendra Knight in the first inning for two runs after Lauren Gaskill singled and Knight allowed two walks. Kelsey Mericka came up with a sacrifice fly to plate Gaskill and then Kristen Froehlich drove in Kylie McGoldrick with a single.
Maryland cut the lead in half in the third inning with a sacrifice fly and that’s the way the game stayed until the seventh inning. In that inning, Marra Hvozdovic came off the bench for a big pinch-hit single to lead off the inning and then Bkaye Smith was re-inserted into the lineup. McGoldrick singled and Courtney Liddle was intentionally walked to load the bases as the Terps elected to go at Mericka. But after several foul balls, the freshman made them pay, driving a shot up the middle to score two runs. Pinch runner Nina Compton later scored on a wild pitch as Knight’s wild day was ended after that.
Jasmin Harrell (W, 17-8) picked up her third win of the weekend in impressive fashion. She went the distance, allowing a run on six hits with no walks and six strikeouts. The junior wiggled out of some tight jams and was helped out by several outstanding defensive plays by her teammates. Knight (L, 17-13) was all over the place on Sunday, walking eight with three wild pitches and tossed just 67 strikes in her 140 pitches.
At the plate, Mericka had two hits and three RBIs to lead the way. Gaskill, McGoldrick, Froehlich and Hvozdovic each had one in the win.
Tech will take the week off before hosting nationally-ranked Florida State in a huge home series. The Hokies are second in the ACC while the ‘Noles lead the league. Because of Easter weekend, the teams will play the single game on Friday at 7 p.m., and the doubleheader on Saturday starting at noon.
