BLACKSBURG - Behind a pair of shutouts from Jasmin Harrell and Bailey Liddle, the Virginia Tech softball team overcame a sluggish day at the plate to down James Madison in a pair of games Wednesday at Tech Softball Park, winning 3-0 and 1-0.

In the first game, Harrell (W, 14-8) was on her game, allowing just three hits while striking out five in a sterling effort.

Tech had eight hits, but it was an error by JMU in the second inning that led to all three Hokie runs. Dani Anderson reached on that error and moved up on Kristen Froehlich’s single before both moved up on Kat Banks’ sacrifice bunt. Bkaye Smith drove home Anderson with a single to right field and Lauren Gaskill’s sacrifice fly drove in Froehlich. The final run came on Kylie McGoldrick’s single to left field, but all three runs were unearned.

Smith led the way with two hits while Banks, Froehlich, Gaskill, McGoldrick, Betty Rose and Kelsey Mericka each had one.

In the second game, the bats were stymied, but the strong pitching of Liddle kept the Hokies in it before they could finally break through in the fourth inning. Anderson walked and went to third base on Froehlich’s single down the line. Anderson scored Tech’s lone run on a wild pitch with pinch hitter Logan Spaw at the plate.

While the Hokies only had three hits (Froehlich, McGoldrick and Anderson), Liddle was outstanding in the circle in moving to 7-3 on the season. She tossed her third shutout of the season, allowing just three hits with two strikeouts.

With the wins, the Hokies improve to 24-12 on the year and have tied their longest winning streak of the season with six victories in a row. The team will head to College Park, Md., this weekend of a big ACC series against Maryland 18-11, 0-0 ACC. The two teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1 p.m., and the single game on Sunday at 1 p.m. Tech is 3-2 in the ACC.
