RALEIGH, N.C. – The Virginia Tech softball team rallied in the seventh inning twice to sweep NC State Sunday at Dail Stadium. The Hokies won the first game 10-2 and then took the second game 4-2.

In the first game, the Wolfpack got on the board first with two runs in the third inning. Tech pitcher Jasmin Harrell issued a leadoff walk and got the next two outs, but gave up a two-run, two-out home run to left-center field to make it 2-0 State.

Tech cut into the lead in the sixth inning when freshman Kelsey Mericka blasted a solo home run to left-center field, her third of the season. After Kristen Froehlich singled up the middle later in the inning, sophomore Kat Banks lifted a two-run home run to left-center, just over the fence, for her first home run of the season to score pinch runner Laura Wolff and give the Hokies a 3-2 lead.

Kylie McGoldrick gave Harrell a little cushion to work with a solo home run to lead off the seventh inning, her second of the season. The Hokies plated a run on a sacrifice fly and one more on a squeeze bunt to break it open, but they weren’t done yet as Lauren Gaskill’s three-RBI double to left field made it 9-2. Gaskill scored on another error to account for the final score.

At the plate, McGoldrick led the way with four hits while, Gaskill had two and Mericka, Banks, Froehlich, and Courtney Liddle all had one.

Harrell went the distance, allowing two runs on four hits with three walks and four strikeouts.

In the second game, Betty Rose gave the Hokies a 1-0 lead with a solo home run in the fourth inning, but the Pack battled back for a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth, forcing a Tech pitching change.

That’s the way it would stay until the seventh inning, when the Hokies did their damage once again. Banks walked and then pinch hitter Logan Spaw singled before Gaskill doubled to score Banks and tie it up. After McGoldrick was hit by a pitch, Courtney Liddle singled through the left side to plate pinch runner Jessica Rappe and Gaskill to give Tech the lead.

Bailey Liddle got the start and went 3.2 innings in earning a no decision. She allowed two runs on five hits with a walk and three strikeouts. Harrell (W, 13-8) pitched the final 3.1 innings to pick up the win. She allowed two hits, walked one and had two strikeouts.

Tech had six hits from six different players: Gaskill, McGoldrick, Courtney Liddle, Rose, Dani Anderson and Spaw.

Tech (22-12, 3-2 ACC) will step out of conference on Wednesday, hosting a doubleheader against James Madison starting at 4 p.m. at Tech Softball Park.
