BLACKSBURG, Va. – After going 1-2 this past weekend in a three-game series against North Carolina, the Virginia Tech softball team (18-12) looks to bounce back as it hosts the Cornell Big Red Tuesday at the Tech Softball Park in a doubleheader starting at 4 p.m.
This is the sixth overall meeting between the two teams, as the Hokies lead the all-time series, 4-1. The series dates back to 1996 in a doubleheader where Tech and Cornell split. The Hokies were given their only loss by the Big Red, 3-1, but then took the final game, 4-0.
The two teams later met in 2001 at the Dixie Classic in Virginia Beach, Va., as Tech claimed another victory, 2-0. Cornell most recently traveled to the Tech Softball Park last season, where the Hokies swept the Big Red, 9-0 and 6-3, and recorded their largest margin of victory.
Cornell (6-6) is coming off a 2-2 weekend as it traveled to Fairfax, Va., for the third time this season. The Big Red fell to Bowling Green, 7-0, and Albany, 1-0, and swept George Mason, 1-0 and 7-4. As a team, Cornell has a .214 batting average, with 67 hits and 35 runs. Senior Erin Keene leads the squad with 13 hits and five runs, good for a .382 percentage.
Following Tuesday’s game, the Hokies travel to Raleigh, N.C., for a three-game series against conference foe NC State beginning with a doubleheader Saturday at 1 p.m.
