GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Virginia Tech softball team swept the UNCG Spartans Wednesday afternoon at the UNCG Softball Field, blanking the Spartans 3-0 in the first game before putting away UNCG, 8-4, in the second contest. Freshman Lauren Gaskill slammed two home runs on the day - the first of her career - to spark Tech’s victories.

In the first game, the fifth inning was the golden inning for the Hokies (17-10). After Bkaye Smith reached on a fielder’s choice, Gaskill lifted the ball over the fence to put the first runs on the board for the Hokies. Later, with two outs and the bases loaded, junior Betty Rose singled up the middle to bring in Kylie McGoldrick for the Hokies’ third and final run.

Jasmin Harrell recorded the win for the Tech, as she improved her season record to 10-6. The junior tossed a seven-hit shut out with one walk and four strikeouts.

At the plate, the Hokies recorded five hits. Dani Anderson led the way with two, while Gaskill, Rose and Smith each had one.

The second game was a bit tighter, as both teams came alive in the first. Tech started it off as Kelsey Mericka singled to the gap to plate two runs in to give the Hokies the 2-0 lead.

UNCG (8-16) responded by scoring three runs on two hits, coupled with a Hokie error, to take the lead back. The big blow was an Eileen Horsmon homer over the left-center fence to put all three runs on the board.

In the second inning, both teams traded runs. Anderson recorded a base hit that brought in a run, while the Spartans’ Alex Emeterio singled to left field to give UNCG a 4-3 lead.

Tech tied it back up in the third inning when Smith doubled it down the left field line that allowed Rose to advance home. In the fifth inning, Gaskill recorded her second home run of the day to give the Hokies the lead back. In the seventh, Tech iced it with three runs and then shut down the Spartans for the win.

Freshman Bailey Liddle recorded the win for Tech as she improved to 5-3 on the season, allowing four runs off of three hits with three walks and five strikeouts.

At the plate, Tech pounded nine hits with Anderson and Mericka leading the way with two hits and two RBIs, apiece. Five Hokies (Gaskill, McGoldrick, Kristen Froehlich, Logan Spaw and Smith) each notched one hit, while Gaskill scored three runs.

Tech will return to Blacksburg this weekend as it opens ACC play with a three-game series with North Carolina. The Hokies will battle the Tar Heels in a doubleheader on Saturday starting at noon and then again at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Admission is free.
