CLEARWATER, Fla. - A grand slam in the first inning was all Syracuse needed to beat the Virginia Tech softball team 5-0 Sunday on the final day of the USF Under Armour Showcase.
The Orange got two hits and a walk before the fourth batter planted one of the fence to quickly make it 4-0. Syracuse would get an unearned run in the fourth inning to account for the final score.
Tech could muster just three hits - two from Betty Rose and one from Kelsey Mericka - against Canadian national team member Jenna Caira.
Jasmin Harrell (L, 9-6) lasted 3.1 innings. She allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits with four walks and two strikeouts. She did get her sister, Jasmine Watson, out both times she faced her, inducing a fly ball and a pop up. Bailey Liddle pitched the final 2.2 innings without allowing a run. She gave up three hits, walked one and struck out one.
Tech (15-10) has now wrapped up its Spring Break trip and will head home after 11 days. The Hokies will be back in action on Wednesday, playing a doubleheader at UNCG starting at 4 p.m.
