CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Virginia Tech softball team rebounded from a rough Friday to bounce back with two good wins Saturday on the second day of the USF Under Armour Showcase. Tech run-ruled Toledo 8-0 in six innings before winning a wild game over Miami University, 6-5 in 10 innings.

In the first game of the day, Tech used a six-rule third inning to break the game open. Kelsey Mericka drove in a run with a single and then Kylie McGoldrick doubled in a pair of runs before Dani Anderson cleared the bags with a three-RBI double to the gap.

In the fifth inning, Lauren Gaskill drove in a run with a single and McGoldrick ended the game with a single up the middle to plate Kristen Froehlich.

Bailey Liddle (W, 4-3) went a solid five innings to pick up the win. She gave up just three hits and two walks and struck out five. Lauren Darden pitched the last innings, allowing two hits with two strikeouts. At the plate, Anderson and McGoldrick each had two hits and three RBIs to lead the way. Gaskill, Courtney Liddle, Mericka, Froehlich and Kat Banks each had a hit.

In the second game, Tech rallied from two runs down, then blew a two-run lead in the seventh inning to only persevere and win the game in 10 innings.

Tech committed two errors in the first inning, leading to two Redhawk runs. That’s the way it stood for a while until the fifth inning when Mericka singled home Tech’s first run of the game. McGoldrick then continued her hot streak with a two-run single to give Tech the lead. In the sixth inning, Gaskill reached when three Miami players collided and the center fielder dropped the ball, allowing Anderson to score.

Tech took a 4-2 lead into the top of the seventh and plated a run on an infield single, but on the play, Anderson committed her third error of the game to allow the tying run to score. The game went to extra innings and neither could score in the eighth inning. In the ninth, Miami scored on a single, but Mericka tied it back up in the bottom of the ninth with a single that just drew chalk.

In the 10th inning, Tech wiggled out of a jam and in the bottom of the inning, Spaw bunted McGoldrick over to third base before Betty Rose drove in the game-winning run with a single to the gap.

Tech got a gutsy performance from Jasmin Harrell (W, 9-5), who went all 10 innings. She allowed five runs, but only two were earned, on 10 hits with two walks (one intentional) and a career-high 12 strikeouts. She tossed 135 pitches, 97 going for strikes in a sterling performance.

McGoldrick picked up three more hits while Anderson and Mericka both had two. Rose had just one hit, but it was the game-winner in the 10th.

The two teams combined for eight errors and only two of the 11 runs scored were earned.

With the wins, Tech improved to 15-9 on the season and will wrap up the tournament on Sunday with a single game against Syracuse at 11:15 a.m. Syracuse is ranked in the ESPN.com poll and is receiving votes in the NFCA poll.
