KISSIMMEE, Fla. - The Virginia Tech softball team split a pair of games Friday on the first day of the Citrus Classic at the ESPN Wide World of Sports, beating Fordham 5-1 before falling to Hofstra 10-0 in five innings.
In the first game, Tech fell behind 1-0, but scored five runs in the fourth inning thanks to four Fordham errors.
Tech had seven hits, led by two from Lauren Gaskill. Dani Anderson, Kelsey Mericka, Betty Rose, Kristen Froehlich and Kylie McGoldrick each had one. Jasmin Harrell (W, 6-3) went the distance, allowing one run on six hits with two strikeouts.
After a quick break, the Hokies to the field against Hofstra, but were never in it as they were no-hit by Olivia Galati. The Pride scored a a run in the second inning on an error and then plated two more in the third on a two-run home run. In the fourth inning, the Pride scored seven runs to put it out of reach and end the game early due to the mercy rule.
Bailey Liddle (L, 2-3) got the start, going 2.1 innings. She allowed three runs (two earned) on three hits with two strikeouts and two walks. Isabella Corrao went 2/3 of an inning, allowing four runs and two walks on two hits. Kat Banks pitched the final inning, allowing three runs and three walks on three hits..
Only a walk from Courtney Liddle in the first inning prevented the perfect game.
Tech (10-7) will play two games on Saturday, taking on Pittsburgh at 2:30 p.m. and LIU-Brooklyn at 7 p.m.
