MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. - The Virginia Tech softball team fell behind early and couldn’t recover late, dropping a 7-4 decision to Middle Tennessee Sunday on the final day of the CofC Cougar Classic. With the loss, the Hokies finish the weekend with a disappointing 2-3 record.
Starter Isabella Corrao (L, 2-1) struggled from the get-go, giving up two runs in the first inning. Tech cut the lead in half with a sacrifice fly from Logan Spaw in the second inning, but the Blue Raiders scored three runs in the third inning off reliever Kat Banks and then two more off Jasmin Harrell in the fourth inning to put it away.
The Hokies fought back with three runs in the sixth inning to put themselves in a position to win late, but couldn’t get anything going in the seventh inning. In the sixth inning, Spaw drove in a run with a single and then Kylie McGoldrick drove in two with a single, but Tech left two runners on base in that inning and never threatened again.
McGoldrick led the way at the plate with two hits and two RBIs while Spaw had a hit and two RBIs. Lauren Gaskill, Dani Anderson, Kelsey Mericka and Courtney Liddle each had one hit.
Tech’s pitchers had a rough go of it on Sunday, allowing seven runs (six earned) on 12 hits. Corrao lasted just an inning, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits with a walk. Banks went 1.1 innings, allowing three runs on three hits while Bailey Liddle failed to get an out in allowing a hit and a walk. Harrell pitched the final 3.2 innings, giving up two runs on five hits while striking out four.
Tech (9-6) will try to right the ship next weekend when it starts its 11-day Spring Break trip to Florida. The Hokies are scheduled to play five games at the Citrus Classic at the Walt Disney/ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista, Fla., before heading to the Tampa/Clearwater area to play in the USF Under Armour Invitational the following weekend. The Hokies will also play an exhibition game against the Dutch National Team during the week.
