MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. - The Virginia Tech softball team got a pair of stellar pitching performances, but could only muster a split of a pair of games Saturday at the CofC Cougar Classic, falling to ULM 2-1 in eight innings before regrouping to beat the College of Charleston, 3-1.
In the second game, Tech got on the board when freshman Logan Spaw ripped her first collegiate home run to make it 1-0. Later in the inning, Kelsey Mericka singled up the middle to plate Dani Anderson and then in the fourth inning, Spaw got a sacrifice fly to drive in pinch runner Nina Compton.
Jasmin Harrell (W, 5-3) was outstanding in the circle, allowing just one run on four hits with two walks and a career-high tying 11 strikeouts. At the plate, Anderson and Mericka each had two hits while Lauren Gaskill, Kristen Froehlich, Bailey Liddle, Betty Rose and Spaw each had one.
In the first game, Tech got a one-hitter from Bailey Liddle in the circle, but couldn’t support her offensively as the Hokies fell in extra innings.
Trailing 1-0, Kylie McGoldrick drove in Gaskill with a single to center field, but the Warhawks plated their run in the extra inning while Tech failed to move its runner off second base.
Gaskill and Mericka each had two hits to lead the way while McGoldrick, Anderson and Bailey Liddle each had one.
Liddle (L, 2-2) tossed a one-hitter, striking out eight while walking three. Only one of her runs scored was earned.
Tech (9-5) will finish up action for the weekend on Sunday, taking on Middle Tennessee at 11 a.m.
