MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. – The Virginia Tech softball team split a pair of games Friday at the CofC Cougar Classic, falling to Lipscomb, 2-0, before coming back to roll past Wagner, 8-0 in five innings.

After a tough loss in the first game of the day, the Hokies broke out early against Wagner. Courtney Liddle drove in a pair of runs with a single to left field and then freshman Kelsey Mericka connected on her first collegiate home run, a monster grand slam to left field to quickly make it 6-0 in the first inning.

Mericka did it again in the third inning, blasting a two-run shot to left-center to tie the school record for home runs in a game and make it 8-0.

Isabella Corrao (W, 2-0) went the distance in picking up the shutout. She allowed two hits and two walks while striking out five. At the plate, Mericka led the way with two hits and six RBIs while Dani Anderson, Courtney Liddle, Betty Rose and Bailey Liddle each had one hit.

In the first game of the day, an unearned run in the top of the first inning proved to be more than enough for Lipscomb pitcher Whitney Kiihnl as the Lady Bisons downed the Hokies 2-0.

The Lady Bisons got a leadoff single and that player eventually scored on a two-out fielding error by Bkaye Smith at shortstop. Lipscomb tacked on a run in the sixth inning with a solo home run to account for the final score.

Tech continued its recent struggles at the plate Friday against Kiihnl, picking up just four hits – one apiece from Mericka, Kristen Froehlich, Kylie McGoldrick and Smith. Kiihnl struck out just three Hokies and walked four, but coaxed nine ground ball outs to help her pick up the shutout.

Jasmin Harrell (L, 4-3) picked up the loss in seven innings of work. She allowed two runs (one earned) on seven hits with five walks and six strikeouts.

Tech (8-4) will be back in action on Saturday against the host Cougars of the College of Charleston at 10 a.m.
