BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech softball team rolled to a 9-1 victory over Radford Tuesday afternoon at Tech Softball Park in front of 214 fans on a chilly afternoon.
The Hokies wasted little time getting on the board when Courtney Liddle continued her torrid start to the season with an RBI single. On the play, Radford committed an error to allow another run to score. Betty Rose then lifted a sacrifice fly to left to plate Liddle and make it 3-0.
In the second inning, Kylie McGoldrick doubled to center to drive in Lauren Gaskill and then Dani Anderson drove in McGoldrick with a single to center to give Tech a 5-0 lead. In the third inning, Kristen Froehlich came in to score on a throwing error to make it 6-0. Radford cut into the lead with a solo home run in the fourth inning, but Dani Anderson got that run right back with a solo home run down the left field line.
Tech ended things in the fifth inning when pinch runner Jessica Rappe scored on a bases-loaded walk by McGoldrick and then Bkaye Smith trotted home to end things when Anderson was hit by a pitch with the sacks full.
Jasmin Harrell (W, 3-0) was in control, allowing just one run on two hits with two walks and nine strikeouts. The Hokies had only four hits in the game – two from Anderson and one apiece from McGoldrick and Liddle, but were helped out by the Highlanders. Radford (0-1) committed three errors, hit four batters and walked six to account for 13 free passes of some sort for Tech.
During the game, the ACC announced that Liddle was named the conference’s player of the week after hitting .706 with 10 RBI last weekend at the Jacksonville Tournament.
The Hokies (6-0) will be back in action this weekend at the ACC/Big 12/SEC Challenge in Auburn, Ala. Tech will face No. 2 Alabama, No. 4 Oklahoma, No. 15 Oklahoma State and Auburn over a three-day span.
