JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - After a slow start, the Virginia Tech softball team awoke and put up nine unanswered runs late to beat UNCG 12-3 in six innings on Sunday to complete a 5-0 weekend at the JU Opening Weekend.
Tech scored an unearned run in the first inning and plated another run in the third on a wild pitch before the Spartans scored two runs in the third inning to tie it up. The Hokies got another unearned run to take the lead back in the fourth inning, but once again UNCG battled back to tie it up.
In the fifth inning, the Hokies finally came alive, plating five runs. Dani Anderson singled and then came home on Courtney Liddle’s monster two-run home run to left-center to make it 5-3. After a pair of walks, Kristen Froehlich blasted a three-run home run over the scoreboard in left field to break it open. In the sixth inning, Liddle drove in another run with a double to the gap, Kelsey Mericka drove in a run with a single and then pinch hitter Marra Hvozdovic plated Tech’s 12th run with a single to left field.
Isabella Corrao got the start, but was pulled in the fourth inning as she got a no decision. She went three-plus innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on five hits with two walks and a strikeout. Bailey Liddle (W, 2-0) got the win as she tossed three innings of shutout ball, giving up just one infield single with three walks and two strikeouts.
Courtney Liddle continued her strong weekend with three more hits and three RBIs in the game. Froehlich also finished off a big weekend with three hits and four RBIs while Anderson had two hits. Mericka and Hvozdovic each had one hit in the game.
For the weekend, Courtney Liddle hit .706 (12-for-17) with two home runs, three doubles and 10 RBIs. Froehlich hit .412 with three home runs and 11 RBIs. Anderson hit .571 while freshman Lauren Gaskill batted .438 with five stolen bases. As a team, the Hokies hit .351 with six home runs, nine doubles and 38 RBIs.
Tech (5-0) is schedule to open its home slate on Tuesday, taking on Radford (0-0) in a single game at Tech Softball Park at 3 p.m., weather permitting.
