BLACKSBURG - Construction crews are already on site and work is underway on a new Daktronics scoreboard and video board for Tech Softball Park, home of the Hokie softball team. This state-of-the-art board will be a recruiting gem and a bright new addition to an already-beautiful facility.

The new board will feature a scoreboard on the bottom portion like the old one, but this one will have LED lights and will be capable of putting team names on the board. The new addition will be something to behold as a video board, sound system, netting, side panels and a steel tress up top will all add to the project. Virginia Tech’s video board will be the fourth-largest college softball display installed by Daktronics.

“The new scoreboard is going to be incredible,” said head coach Scot Thomas. “Not only does it help complete the inside of our softball stadium, but I think our fans are going to really enjoy the features and information that we will be able to provide with a big time flair!”

The overall dimensions of the structure will be 28 feet wide by 21 feet tall, and will include the Sportsound-500HD sound system speakers in the board so the sound will be directed straight to the stands as opposed to over the fans’ heads now.

The 11x18 foot video board (rendering at left) is a HD-15mm LED video display that has 216 lines of resolution high by 360 columns of resolution wide. The display can operate as an independent display showing single large images or be divided in multiple zones (windows) to show a wide variety of statistics, information graphics, animations, and live and recorded video.

It will also have non-lit sponsor displays on the side and will feature the accomplishments of the program. The video board will allow for an introduction video, player spotlights, replay and other in-game enhancements. The board will be protected by a 21x28 foot net that drapes over the front.

Up top will be a steel truss with “Tech Softball Park” illuminated for night games.

“This will be a great addition for the Virginia Tech softball program,” said Daktronics Regional Sales Director Arthur Portnoy. “We are excited to continue our partnership with the Hokies and look forward to following their continued success.”

Construction started on Monday, Aug. 29 with the removal of the old board and delivery of the steel. The framework of the new board is already up. The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of the month, and the hope is to have it operational for Tech’s fall exhibition game against Milligan on Sunday, Oct. 2.
