BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech softball team hosted cross-town rival Radford University Wednesday evening in a non-conference matchup at Tech Softball Park and Kristen Froehlich went deep with Courtney Liddle going 2-for-3 with the a key RBI to lead the Hokies past the Highlanders, 4-1. Tech swept the season series, taking two from Radford this season. The win lifts Tech to 30-11, while Radford falls to 25-14.

After Tech starter Jasmin Harrell set the Highlanders down in order in the top of the first, Froehlich got the ball rolling for the Hokies in the bottom half of the frame, smashing a solo homer over the wall in straightaway center to give Tech an early 1-0 lead.

Harrell continued to shut down the Highlanders through the next two frames, and in the bottom of the third, Dani Anderson got on base with a two-out single down the left-field line. She advanced to second on a passed ball, and Liddle then drove her in with another single down the line.

Marra Hvozdovic led off the fourth with a walk. Richelle McGarva then grounded into a double play, as Radford set a new school record, turning its 25^th double play of the year. Bkaye Smith kept the inning alive, beating out an infield single to third, and Ashton Ward then made in 3-0, crushing an RBI triple all the way to the wall in right center.

Lauren Williams smoked a line drive to the left side to lead off the top of the sixth, but Dani Anderson snagged it out of the air for the first out. However, Kristen Shifflett then followed with a double to the wall in right, making her the first Highlander of the game to make it past first. Nichole Beall continued the hard-hitting inning, plating Shifflett with a single down the left-field line for the Highlander’s first run of the season against Tech. Taylor Cunningham kept it going, hitting a single to left, and chasing Harrell from the circle. Kenzie Roark entered the game in relief, striking out Shannon Keefe and Michelle Beall to get out of the inning and preserve Tech’s lead, 3-1.

Hvozdovic, looking for an insurance run, led off the bottom of the sixth with a double down the left-field line. McGarva followed with a walk, and Smith advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt. Ward then picked up another RBI, scoring Hvozdovic on a groundout to short, to make it 4-1 heading into the top of the seventh.

Jasmin Harrell tossed a solid start, allowing one earned run on four hits and a walk while striking out five in 5.1 innings, earning her 15^th win of the year (15-4). Roark closed out the game, striking out four of the five batters she faced and earning her fourth save.

Jackie Jenkins started in the circle for the Highlanders, allowing seven hits and three runs in 3.2 innings and taking just her second loss of the season (11-2). Chelsea Kelley allowed Tech’s fourth run, allowing two hits and a walk with one strikeout in 1.1 innings. Stephanie Dameron then threw the final inning, retiring all three batters she was responsible for.

Liddle led the Hokies at the plate, going 2-for-3 with an RBI. Ward went 1-for-4 with two RBI, and Froehlich had the fourth RBI with her solo home run in the first. Four different Hokies scored in the game, as Tech out-hit Radford, 9-4. None of the Highlanders reached base more than once, and Nichole Beall plated Shifflett, both of whom went 1-for-3, for Radford’s only score.

Due to the weather forecast this weekend in Charlottesville, the Virginia Tech/Virginia series schedule has been adjusted. The two teams will now play the doubleheader on Friday night at 4 p.m., and will then attempt to play the single game on Saturday at noon.
