BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech softball team upset No. 25 Georgia Tech 4-2 in the first game of a three-game series at Tech Softball Park Saturday afternoon. The second game was halted in the middle of the fourth inning with the Hokies leading 1-0 and will resume Sunday at noon.

The hard-hitting Yellow Jackets struck with a solo home run in the top of the second inning, the 70th round-tripper of the year hit by the squad. In the bottom of the second, Courtney Liddle drew a leadoff walk and then Ashton Ward picked up a two-out single to left field. With runners on second and third, Marra Hvozdovic singled to right field to score pinch runner Sarah Ashby easily before Ward slid around the tag to give Tech a 2-1 lead.

In the third inning, Tech tacked on two more runs thanks to a Liddle single up the middle. Richelle McGarva led off the inning with an infield single and then Kat Banks walked. Both moved up a wild pitch before Liddle squirted one under the glove of the shortstop and into center field for two RBI.

Georgia Tech got a run back in the fifth with a groundout and had a chance for more, but a failed squeeze play left runner Ashley Thomas out to dry and the Hokies executed a perfect run down to quash the rally. Georgia Tech got a run in the fifth inning to make it 4-2, but Tech starter Jasmin Harrell shut down the big bats late in picking up the win.

Harrell (W, 14-3) went the distance, allowing two runs on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts in tossing a 109-pitch gem. At the plate, Tech got hits from McGarva, Hvozdovic, Liddle and Ward.

The Hokies struck first in the second inning when pinch hitter Kristina Cruz fisted a single to left field to plate Ward from third base, but Froehlich was tagged out at home on a close play to keep it to a 1-0 game.

The two teams made it through three and a half innings before the skies opened up, halting the game. The Hokies and Yellow Jackets will conclude the second game starting at noon on Sunday and will then play the final game immediately after.
