This Weekend’s Headlines
• After a series victory at Florida State, the Hokies return home for a three-game series against the hot-hitting Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.
• The series is a big one for the Hokies as Georgia Tech is ranked in the top 25, is 6-0 and leading the ACC with an RPI of 15th while Tech moved up to 59th this week.
• The Hokies and Yellow Jackets will play a doubleheader on Saturday at Tech Softball Park starting at noon and will play the single game on Sunday at 1 o’clock.
About Georgia Tech
• After Virginia Tech dominated the league in 2007 and 2008, Georgia Tech took control of the league and hasn’t looked back, winning a league-record 19 consecutive conference series and the last two tournament titles. Georgia Tech has won 25 of its last 27 games, as well.
• The Yellow Jackets (32-6, 6-0 ACC) are a hard-hitting squad that is second in the nation in home runs with 69 with six players having nine or more. Kelsi Weseman is hitting .394 with 10 doubles, 12 home runs and 38 RBI to lead the offense. Hope Rush (.375, 12 HR) and Kristine Priebe (.356, 10 HR) also lead an offense that features eight regulars hitting .320 or higher. Tech hits .325 as a team with 30 doubles, 69 home runs and 57 stolen bases.
• As good as the hitting is, the pitching is just as stellar with senior Kristen Adkins leading the way. She is 15-3 with a 0.87 ERA and 99 strikeouts in 112.2 innings. Rush is 11-3 with a 2.04 ERA and freshman Lindsey Anderson is 6-0 with a 2.45 ERA.
The Series With Georgia Tech
• The two Techs of the conference have met 26 prior times with Georgia Tech leading the series, 15-11.
• The Yellow Jackets have won the last four over the Hokies to take control of the series, but the Hokies are 4-4 against Georgia Tech at Tech Softball Park in Blacksburg.
Honored by the ACC
• Freshman Dani Anderson was recognized as the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week this past week, while senior teammate Kenzie Roark was selected Pitcher of the Week for their outstanding performances last week. Anderson drove in five runs, while Roark pitched two complete games as the Hokies went 4-1 on the week, earning a series win at league foe Florida State.
• A shortstop from Rio Linda, Calif., Anderson hit .471, collecting eight hits, nine runs and five RBI. A right-handed pitcher from Mt. Juliet, Tenn., Roark finished the week 3-0, pitching 19.2 innings, including two complete games. She finished the week with 10 strikeouts and a 1.42 ERA.
Running Like the Wind
• The Hokies knew they had a lot of team speed heading into the season, but no one expected them to run like this. Through 37 games, Tech already has 76 stolen bases, putting it on pace for 115 for the regular season! The school record for a full season is 105, set in the 2009 campaign.
• Freshman Kat Banks leads the way with 21 swipes while Sarah Ashby is second with 10 while Ashton Ward and Dani Anderson each have nine.
• Twice this year, Tech has tied the school record for stolen bases in a game with seven (Rhode Island, Howard).
Tough Losses
• Six of Tech’s nine losses have been by one run and three of them came on walk-off at bats. Ohio got a single in the bottom of the seventh to win 2-1; Charleston Southern got a single in the bottom of the ninth inning to win 10-9 and Coastal Carolina got a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th inning to win 6-5.
This Time Last Year
• Tech sits at 28-9 overall after 37 games, already topping its win total from 2010 (25). After 34 games last season, the Hokies were 14-23.
