TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – The Virginia Tech softball team jumped out to a 3-0 lead, gave it up, and then manufactured the winning run in the eighth inning to down Florida State 4-3 Sunday in a single game at JoAnne Graf Field.

Dani Anderson got Tech off to a good start with a single to center field and she then moved around the base paths with three wild pitches, but Tech struck out three times to squash a big rally in the first inning.

Tech chased FSU starter Sarah Hamilton in the third inning after putting together another big rally. Anderson led off the inning by being hit by a pitch and moved to third base on Betty Rose’s double down the line. Anderson scored on Kristen Froehlich’s groundout and then Rose came home on Ashton Ward’s double to the gap to make it 3-0.

Hokie starter Jasmin Harrell was cruising into the fifth inning, when the No. 7 and No. 9 hitter both hit solo home runs to make it 3-2, forcing a pitching change.

Roark got out of the jam in the fifth inning, but gave up the lead in the sixth after a leadoff single and a sacrifice bunt that moved the runner to third after no one covered the base. Then, pinch runner Amber Bryant made a perfect slide around the tag at home plate on a groundout to tie the game up.

The Seminoles loaded the bases in the seventh inning, but Roark got top hitter Jen Lapicki to foul out to Rose on a 1-0 count. In the eighth, Ward led off the eighth inning with a single and moved to second on a great slide to beat the throw on Hvozdovic’s sacrifice bunt. They both moved up on Kristina Cruz’s sacrifice bunt and Ward scored when Laura Wolff’s slap hit to shortstop couldn’t get the runner at home to give Tech a 4-3 lead.

Picking up hits for the Hokies were Anderson (two), Ward (two), Rose and Marra Hvozdovic.

Harrell went 4.1 innings, allowing two runs on five hits with no walks and three strikeouts. Kenzie Roark (W, 13-5) went the final 3.2 innings, allowing one run on four hits with a walk and a strikeout.

Tech (28-9, 6-3 ACC) will have the week off before hosting ACC-leading Georgia Tech next weekend at Tech Softball Park. The two squads will play a doubleheader on Saturday at noon before finishing up the series with a single game on Sunday at 1 o’clock.
