This Weekend’s Headlines
• After playing its first 27 games on the road, the Hokies just wrapped up a successful seven-game home stand with a 7-0 record (four by the run-rule). Tech opened the stretch with a sweep of Cornell, swept Boston College last weekend and then beat UNC Greensboro twice on Tuesday.
• The Hokies now head to Tallahassee for a big three-game series with Florida State at JoAnne Graf Field. FSU is 57th in the NCAA RPI while Tech is 63rd.
• The Hokies and Seminoles will play a doubleheader on Saturday at JoAnne Graf Field starting at 1 o’clock and will play the single game on Sunday at noon.
About Florida State
• Florida State sits at 16-17 overall and 2-3 in the conference, but is in any game when senior pitcher Sarah Hamilton is in the circle.
• Hamilton is 9-11 on the year with a 2.15 ERA and has thrown 120.2 innings with 146 strikeouts. Morgan Bullock is serving as the No. 2 pitcher, tossing 61.1 innings. She is 5-4 with a 4.22 ERA and 30 strikeouts. The Seminoles, as a staff, have an ERA of 3.05 with 192 strikeouts.
• At the plate, senior Jen Lapicki is having a big season as she is batting .374 with four home runs and 19 home runs. Robin Ahrberg (.364), Tiffani Brown (.333) and Shayla Jackson (.333) are also hitting over .350 for an offense that hits .285 with 22 home runs and 47 stolen bases.
The Series With FSU
• Virginia Tech leads the series with Florida State, 12-10, after the two squads split four contests last season.
• The Hokies won the first two games of the series at Tech Softball Park before falling in the final game and then the Seminoles ended Tech’s season with a 5-3, come-from-behind win in the semifinals of the ACC Championship in Blacksburg.
• The Hokies are 4-6 against the Seminoles at Graf Field, but did win the 2007 ACC title on that field, beating Georgia Tech.
Offensive Spark Plugs
• Sophomore catcher Betty Rose, along with freshmen Dani Anderson and Kat Banks have been offensive spark plugs for the Hokies. Rose, who hit just one home run last season already has seven round-trippers this season. Anderson has stepped in at shortstop and is leading the team at the plate while Banks is doing it in the outfield, at the plate and on the base paths.
• Rose is currently third on the team with a .348 batting average, leads the squad with seven home runs and is third with 30 RBI.
• Anderson is hitting .410 with four home runs, 33 RBI and nine stolen bases and is doing a fabulous job at shortstop. But her clutch hits have been key as she has 13 two-out RBI, second on the team and is hitting .457 with runners in scoring position.
• Banks is playing a mean centerfield and has gotten hot at the plate of late. She is now hitting .319 with four home runs, 20 RBI and 21 stolen bases.
Running Like the Wind
• The Hokies knew they had a lot of team speed heading into the season, but no one expected them to run like this. Through 34 games, Tech already has 73 stolen bases, putting it on pace for 120 for the regular season! The school record is 105, set in the 2009 campaign.
• Freshman Kat Banks leads the way with 21 swipes while Sarah Ashby is second with 10 while Ashton Ward and Dani Anderson each have nine.
• Twice this year, Tech has tied the school record for stolen bases in a game with seven (Rhode Island, Howard).
Tough Losses
• Five of Tech’s eight losses have been by one run and three of them came on walk-off at bats. Ohio got a single in the bottom of the seventh to win 2-1; Charleston Southern got a single in the bottom of the ninth inning to win 10-9 and Coastal Carolina got a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the 10th inning to win 6-5.
• Tech lost by a run to South Alabama and then fell by two runs to the Jaguars. The Hokies also dropped a one-run game to North Carolina.
This Time Last Year
• Tech sits at 26-8 overall after 34 games, already topping its win total from 2010 (25). After 34 games last season, the Hokies were 13-21.
